I am truly lucky to be living in Silicon Valley. To think that so much of the world’s technology is developed here in my own backyard is nothing short of AMAZING. When I relocated here back in the early 1980s, Silicon Valley was just a shell of what it is now. Sure, there were some technology related companies such as IBM, Apple, and Intel, but the valley really became to be what it is now when companies like Meta and Google set up their offices in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

Now a new force is emerging. AI (artificial intelligence) hype is fueling a new wave of technology companies as well as propelling existing companies such as Nvidia, which became the world’s first 5 trillion-dollar company.

All of these companies have something in common. They need and rely on storage; whether it is stored locally or in the cloud, data is at the heart of all these companies. And although an overwhelming portion of the data is stored on hard disk drives, the three companies that are responsible for the entire world’s HDD supply generally goes about their business without much publicity or fanfare.

My colleague, Tommy Nguyen, produced a wonderful video describing what we at Toshiba do. We create the most cost-effective storage medium to house all of the world’s growing data. Our latest HDD, MG11, tops out at 24TB, which is enough capacity to store over 2 billion pages of text, 2.4 million photos, or 11,000 hours of HD video and its dimensions are about the size of a thin paperback novel. And it doesn’t stop there. We are researching higher capacity products for the future.

A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1TB = 240 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity.
